Sub Driver 3.0 Swallow

The Board Report is my new series on BEACH HEAD’s YouTube for Matt Biolis & …Lost Surfboards. Highlighting and breaking down their new board models as they get released to the public, my interpretation of a board review. In ep.1 I paint then ride the new Sub Driver 3.0 in fun foggy off season Lowers with my friend, Wiley. I put pretty much all my waves from that first session in the vid, showing my process of trying a new board.

After the first surf at Lowers I had some fun sessions in quality SoCal beach break waves before breaking it. I think thats how I know the board really worked well, I trusted it enough to be going for big airs on sketchy sections. Time for a freshie!

The New …Lost Surfboards “Sub Driver 3.0” is a certified rip stick. It has all the float and fast friendly easy to ride vibe that all Sub Driver's have, but souped up with a sharp swallow tail. With the wide point set back this board feels like you can lay down sharp precise turns at max speed and carry that flow easily for the entire wave. I would highly recommend this board to anyone who competes in surfing at every level. I feel like I surf like Filipe Toledo or Michel Bourez on this board, It wants to be laid on rail Hard and Fast, feels like it has this extra gear to shift into when a juicy section or set wave comes to you. Easy to ride like any good small wave board, you just don’t have to nurse turns. This board has me so motivated to go rip when the waves are anywhere from waist to head high. Very fun, very reliable, very much recommend.

I’m on the freaking cover of The Surfers Journal…

I am honored to be on the cover of The Surfers Journal.

Trippin on the significance of this, I’ve wanted to be on the cover of a surf magazine since I was a little kid. Can’t really pinpoint the feeling but I guess I’m just proud.

The photo was taken by Grant Ellis while on an O’Neill trip to Chile. Every day of the trip was stormy or gloomy except for this afternoon. We surfed a super fun left point with an empty lineup. I was riding a 6’0 Quad fin and remember the sensation of the board driving and holding long smooth turns. I love how you can see my track line in the face of the wave on the cover.

I want to thank Grant for talking this photo and The Surfers Journal for printing it on the front page. Also thank you to O’Neill for supporting me all these years and sending me around the world to surf amazing waves. Truly living out my dreams. Thank you - Ian

Home Videos - Stab High Japan 2024

Stab High’s are arguably the most fun surfing events in the world. Amazing surfing, non-stop debauchery and good times with an eclectic group of surfers. The crew at Stab nail it every time and I’m stoked to have been involved over the years.

This year I brought Yasmine with me, we took advantage of the event being held in Japan and flew out early to be tourists. We wondered the streets of Tokyo day and night checking out anything that caught our eye. Ate delicious food, met up with friends, saw beautiful art, stumbled into top notch entertainment and experienced the amazing Japanese culture. Above is a video diary of our trip, filmed on my little handy cam. Below are some film photos Yasmine shot, one of my favorite photos of the trip is available on a T-shirt with “Beach Head” written in Japanese characters. Hope you enjoy.

Oregon Snow Trip

Just got home from an epic road trip up to Oregon with Yasmine, visiting her cousin Grace and her husband Tyler. They moved up there this summer and we have been wanting to do a road trip to check them out for a while now. Packed my truck with a bunch of surf and snow gear and made our way up. Split the drive in two and stayed at Yasmines sister’s apartment in San Fran on the way up. Walked around the city in the rain and ate insane Chinese food. We left the city early the next day and the drive was meant to be 8 and a half hours but ended up taking about 10 due to hectic road conditions on the highway going through an icy mountain pass. Almost got in a crazy accident, it was snowing, hard to see and the road was covered in ice. I was driving behind a semi truck up the mountain and he randomly came to a stop for no reason. I hit my breaks and started to slide, even in 4w drive and snow tires. I had to steer off the side of the road into a snow bank to slow myself to avoid sliding and crashing into the truck in front of us. I look in my mirror to see the car behind us, an old ass mobile home flying towards us way too fast and I accelerated more into the snow bank to get out of his way. He didn’t even try to stop knowing he was going to slide on ice if he hits the breaks, so he veers into the oncoming traffic lane and narrowly skirts by us and the truck stopped ahead. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic, we would have been so fucked! After that I don’t think I drove over 30mph the rest of the way.

Grace & Tyler moved to Bend from San Diego the same time as Tylers best friend Chris, and his wife. Chris and Tyler have been going up to snowboard Mt. Bachelor together since they were kids and it’s been their dream to live up there for the winter and snowboard every day. They are both in their 30s now and somehow convinced their wives it was a good idea to quit their jobs, pack up their lives, and move to Oregon. Grace now has a job in Bend doing plant stuff for a landscape design company and the boys are just up there snow bumming it. On the mountain every morning for first chair, literally living out there childhood dream. SO FUCKING SICK! Not enough people do that shit. Up root and send it to where you want to be and do what you want to do. unknowingly diving into a new life and rolling with it together. They all seemed so happy to be there on their new life adventure, Im frothing we had time to go see them before life takes them somewhere else. They reassured me that following what you love is where it’s at and doing it as a team is what it’s all about.

We scored insane snow, fresh powder every morning. Following Tyler and Chris around the mountain was awesome, they have it so dialed. Yasmine was ripping and we had a blast adventuring through the trees. Back home now with so much swell on the way. freaking out. Christmas and the holidays are fucking up my surf schedule haha.

Chris and Tyler love filming and making edits, like the “Shaun Wide” video above from our trip. Check his YouTube channel for some classic videos of them on the mountain. @laladartboard10

Sub Driver 2.0 “Double Dart”

5’10” x 19.38” x 2.45” x 29.50cl

This is my third “Double Dart” full carbon Sub Driver, all 3 have been the same dimensions and I love having one in my quiver. This has been my go-to board in wave pools for the past year or so. I rode one in this years Stab High event in Japan as well as in the Swatch 9’s event in Waco. You can really feel the difference with the carbon compared to the same model board in different constructions. First off the core is a stringer-less epoxy blank, then the entire board is wrapped with carbon fiber and finished with epoxy resin so the board is extremely light weight and super durable. The stiffness of the carbon counters the extreme flex of the stringer-less epoxy core so it gives the board a unique pop unlike any other board I’ve ridden. Due to the short board outline a generous amount of rocker and thumb tail, the board seems to really like pockety waves in the waist to head high range, perfect for most days around California. Anything more than head high+ it seems to have too much twang and spark making it feel super squirly. I got this board right into a fun combo swell at home and I couldn’t get off it. If you look closely in some clips the board kind lacks projection through bigger sections, but it makes up for it with extra squirt in smaller pockets. I ended up buckling this board in the Waco wave pool after three days strait of non stop airs. Time for a replacement!

Home Videos - Surfing With My Fiancé

Heres a video of a little session at Oceanside Harbor with Yasmine. I got this waterproof handy cam recently, the clips look like a shitty GoPro with zoom, i’ts fun to mess around with.

I love surfing with Yasmine when the waves are tiny. She doesn’t like to surf when the waves get over 2 feet so it’s perfect, when it’s small I always have a surf buddy. Usually we will go ride logs at SanO or Terra Mar. Lately she’s been frothing to ride her mid length and I’ll get her to paddle out with me somewhere a bit punchier so I can ride a fish or shortboard. She’s got the surf bug bad right now coming out of summer and is hinting to me that she wants a shorter board so she can “try turns.

The first time I took her surfing we weren’t Boyfriend Girlfriend yet and she never really told me she knew how to surf. I thought I was going to have to help her get into waves and teach her how to stand up and shit. I’m talking to her before we hop in the water like she doesn’t know anything, then we start to paddle out. I’m baffled as she easily paddles into the lineup on her own. Then she catches her first wave, pops up cross steps re-directs and trims down the line with proper style and kicks out clean… I’m trippin! I had the biggest dumb smile on my face watching her ride waves. When I came in a girl on the beach was all like, “ohhhh my goddd is that your Girlfriend? She’s perfect!” I said “yes it is.
